June 14, 2004 After months and months of delay and frustration, I've FINALLY managed a major overhaul of the site. Things may still be a little sticky around here - please be sure to tell me if you find any glaring errors or mistakes. Things are going well here in London. I'm working away on my PhD as well as assorted part-time work to keep bread on the table! I also have my fingers crossed that I will be able to come home to Canada for two weeks at the end of August. PS: Please check out the new Election 2004 section for all of your democratic needs. April 29, 2003
Hey! I'm not dead! Just apparently lazy. Unfortunately, nothing much to report. Well, I'd like to announce that I'm SARS free - as is 99.9999999% of Toronto - but other than that, I haven't had the time to write as much as I would like. So unless you are interested in the Geneva Conventions - there isn't much new here for now. I have however made some important updates and cleaned up the links (kinda...) Oh - and there is a snazzy new picture of me in the About Me section. January 29, 2003 Canadian American Relations: Late last year MSNBC commentator-guy Pat Buchanan called our fair nation "Soviet Canuckistan", the "blame America first crowd" and "a complete haven for international terrorists"... Wow - Pat's clearly gotten a little more angry with us than he was in the mid-1990s when he merely felt that "for most Americans, Canada is sort of like a case of latent arthritis. We really don't think about it, unless it acts up."
But never fear - the PMO was on the case when Francoise Ducros was overheard calling George Bush a "moron" at the Prague NATO summit. Now I have my feeling about W down there - but if you are a diplomat, perhaps you should be at least trying to act the part... Moron. There is so much that can be said about US-Canadian relations that to even attempt to put something meaningful down here would be ridiculous. We can endlessly point to the differences (they have a penchant for all meat things jerky and we like our donuts) in confirming this - but really we exaggerate these minor points to the extreme. And yes - this page does have a role in doing that - because getting along with one another doesn't mean you can't poke your friend in the ribs. Poke. *cough*Iraq*cough* So, in order to compensate for the "morons" around - be they Yank or Canuck, I thought I would put some 49th Parallel lovin' for this post. I am happy to report that www.defectiveyeti.com - one of my all-time favourite web pages on the net - put a link to the good ol' Canada Page late last year - but I was too lazy to update the page in time for the link to last. Still... thanks! Matt - the blogger of defectiveyeti.com wrote this piece in November on Canada and I am always a sucker for how our neighbours to the south view us. Please read in the Soapbox section here. And for all of those Yankees that can't get enough Canadian Statistics, I bring you the "Everything you ever wanted to know about Canada" Statistics page. I'm sure you'll enjoy. As always, links have been updated. Oh - and my friend Cassadra asked me to link to her page. It's on Pez... which really doesn't have much to do with Canada... unless there is mountie pez.... hmmm.... September 15, 2002 Okay - I didn't manage to update on time. Quelle suprise. Well, after a year spent abroad, in England, I am back in Canada. I really enjoyed my time in Europe, but I have to admit that I am glad to be back. I won't bore you with the details here, but for the curious, Mom's cooking never tasted so good! Last update I forgot to include a link to my new place of work, the Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies (CISS) in Toronto. We deal with international military and defence issues. (Can you guess what the theme of the next additions to the site are going to be on?) What has been added to the site this time around are two pages in the Canuck Abroad section written by some of my friends that have been living outside of Canada. I wanted to record different international experiences other than my own. It's interesting stuff, so be sure to check it out. 'Till next time! July 23, 2002 Wow - I actually managed to update on time! Go me! I am happy to announce the creation of a new feature at thecanadapage.org: Canada in Pictures! It's a page with pictures that I have been collecting on and off the net that show weird Canadian things or important political-historical-type-stuff. Check it out! However, I am really happy to say right now that I am COMING HOME! As of mid-August, I will be back on Canadian soil. I am also happy to say that I will be temporarily-quasi-gainfully-employed as an intern with the Canadian Institute for Strategic Studies. Oh - and as soon as I can afford to develop my film, I'll update the British/Abroad stuff - I promise! More to come - so stay tuned! I may even update the page within a month... Here's hoping anyway! June 30, 2002 There is a quick update for you. Actually, I just wanted to have something up for C-Day (my new slang. Cool, eh?) since I missed last year so abysmally. This year I am going to celebrate here in London. There are some cool things planned at Canada House (the High Commission - not embassy!) and at the world famous Maple Leaf in Covent Garden. Compromsing pictures to follow, I am sure :-D So, for your reading pleasure, I have taken (borrowed) an article from the Globe and Mail that you may find interesting: Canadians embrasing patriotism, poll shows. Okay - not the snazziest title - but it gets to the point. Have a great Canada Day! June 26, 2002 Back again! Apparently the page reverted back to the September 2001 edition. I have no idea why. The page just likes to do things like that. And sometimes we just don't mess with the will of the page. So I have finally finished my exams! Now I am working on my thesis - probably until the end of the summer. And then? Who knows! I have my fingers crossed though. Oh - and London has gone nuts. Between the World Cup, the Jubilee and some nice weather (finally!) the Union Jack and Cross of St. George have been everywhere. I am sure that they are going to cannonize Beckham regardless of the result. It's only a matter of time. I just wish he'd get rid of the mohawk. Sheesh. Due to exams and a virus that I am sure was some lesser form of ebola, I haven't been able to do update as much as I would like to right now. You know the drill by now, right? Anyway, you can check out the newly updated Finance page after some... uh... interesting goings on in the Liberal Party. As well, in honour of the Queen's 50 years - I have updated the Crown page for all of your wacky monarchy needs. Canada Day in London is coming up and I am really excited... I'll keep you posted.... really. Incidently, the re-incartated page is celebrating its two year anniversary this Canada Day. Go us! The Canada Page, bringing you sarcasam, democracy and all of the usless Canadian trivia you need since 1996. April 20th, 2002 It's alive! Okay, time for some answers. 1) What the heck happened to the site? I wish I knew! In the wake of September 11 and the dot.com bubble bust, my former host company has gone AWOL. After registering them for another year, my page disapeared. 2) So why didn't you try to do anything about it? Believe me, it wasn't for a lack of trying! I have been living in London, England - which makes communicating with a non-existant North American company that much more difficult. As well, there was the cash problem. I had spent my allocated internet budget on getting another year of service - which didn't happen. I just didn't have the financial resources to find a new host automatically. It's a pretty big site. 3) Are you out of excuses? Um... yes. 4) So are you hear to stay? Sheesh! I hope so. Definatly working on it. The good news is that I was able to take some time out and do some updates. The Premiers page has been fixed, various cabinet minster information changed with the latest shuffles, and new blurb about the Trudeau Movie on CBC. There is also a new Top Ten List and a new section called "Canuck Abroad" which chronicles the mundane details of my life overseas - but soon to add stories of more of my friends while they are away from home. So bear with me - and I'll get this place in tip-top shape again really soon. It's just nice to be back in action. The Canada Page - with almost continuous service since 1996.
