AIP I: - I get to go to a swinging shindig in the 'shwa with the PM and meet the Canadian Snowbirds!
(As if you really needed another picture of the PM and me.)

I received a phone call from my dad the day before I was to come home. Much to my delight I found out that I was invited to attend a "garden party" with the Prime Minister, the minister of industry and other Oshawa political type folks. Needless to say I feel over-important and cool. Anyway, the mayor was there too and I got to have a nice conversation with her. I really like her - especially since she is a Queen's grad. (Arts '61 I think.) The whole thing was to celebrate GM's announcement that it was creating a new high tech development facility in Oshawa which will create 150 engineering jobs. Eng - get your sites set on the 'Shwa.

I was also lucky enough to go to a BBQ with the Snowbirds. I don't know if you have seen some of my other updates but I LOVE the Snowbirds. My dad took me to lots of air shows when I was a kid and ever since I have really loved to see them. Anyway the BBQ was really neat. There was about 150 people there but all of the snowbirds (around 30 of them) worked the crowd really well and were extremely personable. (Not to mention incredibly good looking - but that really doesn't have to do with anything :-D) I got to chat with #1, 2 and 6 (Right outer wing who makes 1/2 of the heart thingy - I remember that) at length.

Like I said before if you get a chance to see the Snowbirds, do it. They were in Oshawa to commemorate a fellow Snowbird that was killed while training. It's an unfortunate occasion that brought them to the 'Shwa, but I was really glad to meet them.

AIP II: Start Spreading the News! I Just Went To New York, New York!
(I also Knock Over the Secretary General- D'0h!)

I will be very honest about this: NEW YORK IS ONE OF THE GREATEST CITIES IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!! I had a great time! I went with the Queen's International Affairs Association for the purpose of going to see the Canadian Mission to the United Nations and the United Nations itself. The group had a chance to meet with a lot of officials on Friday at the Canadian Mission including Ambassador Robert Fowler, Permanent Representative to the UN for Canada. (He's a Queen's graduate!)  It's a really exciting time to go to the UN as a Canadian since we are currently one of the 10 non-permanent members sitting on the Security Council. It was also neat to hear what Canada has been pushing for on the Security Council. Touring the UN was also really neat. There is a lot of really interesting artwork around the place. The one highlight that stands out in my mind: The UN Delegates Dining Hall. Sweet Lord - it was the best meal that I have ever had in my life (outside of yours Mom, of course!)  It was Croatian Theme time - and, wow, was it awesome. Go Croatia! I ate so much (in a really polite manner) that I couldn't eat for another 24 hours. I really, really, really, hope to eat there again. I am definitely open for invites.

Anyway, outside the dining hall, as I began to recover from the Olympic eat-off, I was wondering around and whacked into some gentleman. I quickly said excuse me - but then something made me turn around and look again. I had just hit the Secretary General of the UN rather hard. The only thing that came to my brain was "Oh! Hi!" and I apologized again. He gave me a weird look said "Hi" and then security - who was none to impressed with me, escorted him into the dining hall. So much for my career in diplomacy!

In all honestly, the UN is FANTASTIC - and it seems that I have been hearing a lot about it in the last couple of weeks. Anyway, I picked up enough UN information to sink a battleship so if you are interested in it I would be more than happy to oblige you for information.

Anyway, if they ever read this: Canadian Mission: you guys are great! Thanks for letting us visit. UN: you have a really nice building - and a GREAT dining room! Kofi Annan: I am really, really, sorry for hitting you. I hope to meet you under better circumstances one day!

Check out the UN page for some more pictures.
